German automobile maker Audi inaugurated on Friday a brand-new plant in Mexico, where it will develop the new Audi Q5 SUV.
The factory close to the central city of Puebla will have a production capacity of about 150,000 vehicles a year according to the company.
Audi will manufacture standard gasoline-powered versions of the SUV, and will later present greener models.
“We will bring electricity and electrified versions (of the Q5 SUV) here to Mexico,” Audi Chief Executive Officer Rupert Stadler stated, following the inauguration.
“I’m discussing the plug-in hybrid in the very first stage,” he said.
Audi said in a statement that the new Mexican factory will most likely quickly develop an SUV that can drive in electrical mode.
