Blast from the Past: The 1977 100 C2 Avant is what the present Audi A7 has come from

by Alex

Cars having four doors as well as a rear hatch could be called with differing names, some of which are fastback, liftback, hatchback, and five-door coupe. Audi have recently introduced two more to this line of cars named the A7 Sportback and the A5 Sportback. The A5 being a more compact version of the A6.

However, it was the Avant from the Ingolstadt based automaker that we had seen as the first presentation of the hatchback version of a car. Thereafter the company had pondered for 30 years on the making of a car that would be fitting the upper medium car segment and be the fastback model.

They used the Avant moniker for its Station Wagon models which began with the third generation of the 100 in 1982.

The car sold alongside the two door coupe and four door saloon versions of the same series. A statement by Audi on their initial car says it’s all “its hatchback and large tailgate characterized a new vehicle concept in the upper midsize segment. Due to its many possible uses, this estate car with four doors and split rear seats increasingly became a bestseller in years to come.”

There is a mix of inspiration of the current model in its designs and looks. Similar to the 1977 100 Avant in body style however the rear end as well as the upward pointing tip of the third side are all inspiration drawn from the coupe version of the first 100 from 1969. This has been mentioned in the official press release also.
