German automaker BMW will recall almost 200,000 of its cars for maintenance in China because of issues with their airbags, state media reports, mentioning the Chinese quality control agency.

When activated, motorist or passenger airbags might harm a gas generator which could cause debris injuries, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine published on its website on Monday.

The recall will impact 193,611 automobiles which had airbags from Japanese vehicle parts provider Takata.

BMW states it will replace the malfunctioning parts free of charge.

Takata’s faulty airbag inflators have forced automakers to recall tens of millions of automobiles worldwide.

Its malfunctioning air bags can possibly rupture explosively when released in an accident, spraying metal pieces at drivers along with passengers.

A minimum of 15 deaths and over 150 injuries have been linked to the defect globally, Takata stated in June.
