An eco-friendly Lamborghini

by Adrian Hayden

It seems that the new Lamborghini will be greener than ever. The Aventador Lp700-4 is the successor of the Murcielago and will have reduced CO2 emissions by 20% without sacrificing performance. Lamborghini CEO, Stephan Winkelmann said: “the new model is part of Lamborghini’s commitment to slash carbon dioxide emissions by 35 percent by 2015”. The new model is expected to make its debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, and will feature a new 6.5l V12 engine that will deliver 700 BHP, more than the current Murcielago which delivers 640 BHP. The car will emit only 398g/km of CO2 and will have a fuel consumption of 17.2 liters per 100 km, or 15.6 mpg.

The present Murcielago has a fuel consumption of 22l per 100 km or 12.5 mpg. Giancarlo Reggiani, the Technical Director of Lamborghini says that the new performance figures are resulted from a new and more efficient power-train unit that reduces the CO2 emissions.

Lamborghini has appealed to all kinds of tricks in order to lower the CO2 emissions: they installed new tires with lower rolling resistance and designed a more aerodynamic exterior. They also used a lot of carbon fiber, making the new car with 100 kg lighter than the old Murcielago. The new engine itself is 18 kg lighter than the old engine.
