Tesla Motors informed on Sunday that it will upgrade its Autopilot semi-self driving system in such a way that will make its electrical automobiles more depending on radar, rather than cams, and enhance its accuracy in being able handle dangers.

CEO Elon Musk informed press reporters in a teleconference that the enhancements likely would have prevented the only death that is credited to the Autopilot system. Because May accident, an Ohio man driving a Model S on Autopilot in Florida was killed.

Musk painted the brand-new system as a “dramatic improvement,” one that might make Tesla’s in Autopilot mode as much as three times safer than automobiles without the system. It reveals not only that Tesla is dedicated to leading when it concerned the advancement of totally self-driving vehicles, however that it ready to do something about it after the Florida crash. Musk stated he believes the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which started an investigation as a result of crash, will be responsive to the enhancements.

The radar-based system is not just going to be better at acknowledging risks, but will also have the ability to send its beam through rain, snow and dust and able to bounce its beam under the automobile in front of it, Musk informed. That must help avoid chain-reaction, rear-end crashes. He also said the brand-new system should be accurate enough to stop the automobile to avoid striking a big animal, like a moose, though it most likely still isn’t good enough to prevent a collision with a little deer.

The brand-new system will be beamed wireless to Tesla vehicles made in the last couple of years in the next two weeks, Musk told. It replaces the previous system, which depended more on cams in mix with radar to recognize things. “It’s no longer a supporter actor,” Musk stated of radar. “Now, it’s a star.”

Musk told he’s wished to make the modifications for a while, but was always met with excuses.

“I was always told, no, it’s not possible, it’s not going to work, no one else has made it work, the software application is too tough,” Musk said. “I really pressed hard on testing those assumptions.”

Musk warned that the enhanced Auto-pilot system does not mean “perfect safety,” which he states is unachieveable. Drivers will still have to remain attentive and if they aren’t, if they refuse to put their hands of the wheel and disregard alarms, the automobile won’t remain in Auto-pilot. The system will not initiate once again until the vehicle is restarted, Musk said.
