General Motors Stops Sales of 60,000 SUVs due to Incorrect EPA Labels

An unintended mistake noting an incorrect EPA fuel economy rating on about 60,000 crossovers from General Motors Co. led the automaker to inform dealers to stop offering the automobiles till the labels can be changed. The incorrect labels overemphasize the vehicle’s fuel economy score by one to 2 miles per gallon.

The automaker has actually stopped all sales of its 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadias and Buick Enclaves. The number of cars included about 59,823, and dealers may not provide the cars to clients till the incorrect label has actually been replaced by the correct one.

The incorrect labels list the car’s fuel economy ratings as 17 city, 24 highway and 19 combined. The appropriate labels for all three models with all-wheel drive offer fuel economy ratings of 15 city, 22 highway and 17 integrated. Labels on front-wheel drive designs were also inaccurate and are being replaced.

A General Motors representative informed that an inadvertent “data transmission” triggered the mistake, and that General Motors is working quickly to obtain proper labels printed and delivered to dealers. The error was found when company engineers were reviewing the label for the 2017 model versions of the automobile.
