Etherea Concept: Infiniti’s probable BMW 1-Series and Audi A3 competitior debuts at Geneva

by Alex

One of the most significant items on display at the Infiniti booth in the ongoing Geneva Motor Show is the Etherea concept study. One of the star attractions of the show for sure, the upcoming entry level model from Japan is likely to make things difficult for the likes of the Audi A3 or the BMW 1-series. The production model is expected to be available towards 2014.

Shiro Nakamura has been the main brain behind the design of this Etherea concept. The car comes in a five door design having a fair touch of the 2009 essence sports car in it. The car manufacturers have stated that the car would be a mix of a coupe taking its elegance with the space of a sedan and partly hatchback and tall too.

Corporate Vice President and Leader of the Global Infiniti Business Unit, Toru Saito states “ETHEREA is about a new type of luxury. It is for younger buyers who do not want a smaller version of a typically conservative and traditional luxury car. It is for people who want a car that defines who they are, not who their parents were.”

The car maker has also declared that they have plans to make the design of the tail lamp and headlight of this concept model as their traditional characteristic from now on.

The car has a four seat capacity and has not much of styling features for the interior. This highlights the premium material that has been used for the interior designing aspects. The car otherwise has been designed on a b-pillar less concept with opposing doors.

Overall length of the car is 4.4 m and the platform on which it was built can accept a hybrid power train. The power house of the concept is a gasoline-electric combination. As for its powertrain, a 2.5 liter supercharged 4 cylinder petrol engine delivering 245HP is the main driving force behind the car. The electric motor drives the front wheels with its continuously variable transmission (CVT) feature.

The other notable features of the concept are the independent suspension, regenerative braking system and advanced drive-by-wire electric/hydraulic steering system.
