Honda Motor stated on Wednesday it would start selling compact electric vehicles (EVs) in Japan in 2020 after a release in Europe in 2019, but its chief executive stated it remained a tough business.

The company will clear cost-related obstacles for compact EVs and find better ways to produce them, CEO Takahiro Hachigo informed press reporters at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opened to media on Wednesday.

Electric vehicles cost more than standard cars because of the high expense of batteries.

Hachigo said that Honda was studying other potential markets for the zero-emission vehicles, however that they were probably not appropriate for the United States market.
