Korean automakers Hyundai Motor and affiliate Kia Motors will pay $41.2 million to deal with a long term investigation by 33 U.S. states over the car manufacturers’ 2012 mileage restatements, state attorney generals stated.

In 2014, the car manufacturers were hit with $350 million in charges by the U.S. government for overemphasizing fuel economy ratings. Under the accord, which included the sale of 1.2 million automobiles and SUVs, the vehicle companies paid a $100 million charge, invested around $50 million to prevent future offenses and surrendered emissions credits approximated to be worth over $200 million. That settlement was on top of $395 million the car manufacturers consented to pay in 2013 to solve claims from the owners of the automobiles.
