Mercedes Benz had about a year back declared plans to build a fully electric version of their SLS AMG supercar. They have kept to their word and revealed a proto type model of the car which they have named as “SLS AMG E-Cell”.
Four electric motors each placed near the wheels replace the original 571 hp 6.3 liter V8 petrol engine of the SLS AMG. The four separate motors provide heightened effectivity to the vehicle and make it a proper four wheel drive car. Mercedes has used this technology as compared to the wheel hub motors there is reduction in unsprung mass and that too of substantial amount.
The combined effect of the four motor produces 392 kW of power which is equivalent to 526 hp. It also produces a maximum 880 Nm or 649 lb-ft. of torque and the best thing is, all of this torque is available right from the moment the motor starts.
With its zero emission advantage comes the other advantage of high pick up speeds, making the 0 to 100 kmph (62 mph) sprint in just 4 seconds.
The battery pack consists of 400 volt liquid cooled high voltage lithium battery. The battery recharging takes place during braking operation. The batteries have been located in front of the firewall, in the center tunnel and also behind the seats. The design provides a distributed weight situation as well as low center of gravity which further aids in all round vehicle dynamics and maneuverability.
The original body of the SLS AMG E being that of Gullwig model Aluminium space frame, it requires no modification to install these drive components in it.
There are however some changes to the interior and exterior of the SLS AMG E Cell. The electric version called the AMG luminetric magno gets a bright paint job. It also has a new front apron with an extendable front splitter. Then we have color coded grille trim. A revised set of air vents and the mirrors have a darker finish. The wheels and the new diffuser are different from the original tail pipes.
The instrument cluster is naturally way different from the original version of the car. Speed display and charge status with an estimated range also being indicated. There is a touch screen for infotainment. This connects to audio and climate updates as well as for navigational purpose. This display also gives us how much is the power flow from each of the four electric motors.
The upholstery also has a changed look. There is the mix of black and white leather and Alcabtara on the seat, steering wheel door linings and center console. These are the major alterations one finds on the electric powered SLS AMG.
Dates for commencement of production of this car are yet undecided and undeclared. It could however be expected to be available in limited numbers in early 2013.
