Following various rounds of rumors and speculations, Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG GmbH have finally announced their plans for a tie-up.
The final agreements will be made before the end of the year, but we already know this deal will allow Aston Martin to access Mercedes-Benz and AMG resources which will lead to the development of bespoke V8 engines. Also, Aston Martin will get to utilize some components of the electric and electronic architectures developed by the Germans to launch a new series of V8-powered models.
In return, Daimler AG is going to own a stake of up to five percent in Aston Martin, depending on how the terms of the agreement are finalised. They will join other shareholders of the company like Adeem Investment and Investindustrial. A supply agreement between Mercedes-AMG GmbH, Daimler AG and Aston Martin is also included as a part of this deal.
AM’s product development director Ian Minards stated that they had selected AMG specifically as the basis for this powertrain development process. Head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH Ola Källenius said that they were proud to work with Aston Martin and provide them with powertrain and e/e components for their forthcoming sports cars. He further said that this development is a proof of AMG’s technological and performance expertise and a real win-win situation for both sides.
