Power is provided to the Peugeot 208 TYPE R5 by a 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine, which develops a total output of 280 BHP (208 kW) at 6,000 rpm and it has a peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) available at 2,500 rpm. This is a four-wheel drive car fitted with a five-speed sequential gearbox and two self-locking differentials. The Peugeot 208 TYPE R5 is 3,962 mm long, 1,820 mm wide and it rides on a 2,560 mm wheelbase.

“We are aiming for performance which is slightly higher than that of the S2000”, says Bertrand Vallat, project leader for the 208 Type R5. “We are starting with the 1.6 l THP, that is already a prize winner. We know that it is reliable and powerful and we can achieve 280 horsepower. We are also aiming for a very high level of durability and reliability with between 3,000 and 5,000 kilometres (according to the components and conditions), which will also reduce the operating costs.”

The shell of the 208 TYPE R5 has, in fact, benefited from a weight reduction of approximately 40 kilos compared with its predecessor the 207, without forgetting the minimum weight set at 1200kg. The R5 will be sold with a luminium monoblock 8”x18” wheels for asphalt and 7″x15″ for gravel.

FIA has also set the maximum price for the ‘R5s’ at €180,000 (US $ 238,700) excluding taxes.

Peugeot Sport’s new competition model will begin a test program at the end of 2012 on both asphalt and gravel surfaces before it goes on sale in the second half of 2013.
