The ongoing Beijing Auto Show notwithstanding, BMW chose a hotel ballroom to unveil its new 4 door Concept Gran Coupe. A coupe it is named alright but you’ll be pardoned if you think it to be a sedan. For it does like one.
The theme of the BMW Concept Gran Coupe is simple. To have a real GT that has a real backseat and that drives like a real sports car. While it’s still some years before we know for sure if BMW has be able to achieve what it has set out to do, the design of the car with its low wide stance does make an effort to imbibe the speed bit into it.
The BMW Concept Gran Coupe is likely to be built on the same platform as the 5 and 7 series sedans but at 55 inches, it is 4 inches shorter than either of these cars. The most notable features at the front are the big air intakes and the distinctive LED headlights. Windows are without frames which is understandable since it is meant to be a coupe and not a sedan.
The roofline tapers off gently towards the rear where BMW designers have done a good job in ensuring the rear does not resemble a fat butt. The company has not revealed any details pertaining to the drivetrain, the interiors or when the finished product might hit showrooms. But going by the very finished exterior, it might begin appearing at the dealers within a couple of years from now.
Till then, BMW would perhaps like to see the rumor ball rolling. Like there’s already talk of this as the 8 series that is getting a new lease of life.
