Toyota Mirai billboard

Billboards do not truly do anything– except for Toyota’s new Mirai billboards, which are in fact engineered to clean the air around them.

From April 3 to May 28, Toyota will set up 37 billboards around Los Angeles and San Francisco, promoting the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell car. In order to enhance how clean a hydrogen-powered electrical automobile can be, the billboards are constructed to scrub pollution from the air.

It runs in a similar way to a catalytic converter, utilizing precious metals to help cleanse the air passing by.

A titanium dioxide-coated vinyl responds with oxygen, transforming nitrogen oxide emissions to nitrates and eliminating them from the air. Besides the coating, the signboard requires nothing aside from light, humidity and air. Toyota likewise wrapped a Mirai in the exact same coated vinyl at the Environmental Media Association Impact Summit in Beverly Hills, California.

These 37 billboards include about 25,000 square feet of pollution-removing product to the California landscape. It’s approximated that the signboards will eliminate the equivalent of 5,285 automobiles’ worth of nitrogen oxide emissions from the air every month. Nitrogen oxide is a component of both smog and acid rain, so its elimination from the air is a good idea.

California is the main market for the Mirai, given its filling facilities, however limited it might be at the minute. Its fuel cell powertrain deals with compressed hydrogen, transforming it to electrical energy that powers the car.
