Volkswagen Passat TDI aims to set new fuel economy record

by SpeedLux

Volkswagen has recently announced its ambitious plan to attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the model having the lowest fuel consumption during a trip throughout the contiguous United States.

In order to break the previous record, the two drivers will pilot a 2013 Passat TDI for 8,000 miles (12,875 kms) over the course of two weeks.

David Geanacopoulos, Executive Vice President for Public Affairs and General Counsel of Volkswagen Group of America, stated that this attempt was quite a fun and exciting way for the company to demonstrate the efficiency advantages of diesel technology. He further stated that Passat TDI is a remarkable car and that it has a good chance to beat the existing world record.

Just to brief, the Passat TDI comes fitted with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that generates a 140 hp (104 kW) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. When equipped with a manual transmission, the car gives an average of 31 mpg city / 43 mpg highway (US).
