Volkswagen is going to stop producing over 40 car models in the coming years as part of a new plan made by the automaker.

Volkswagen stated it will invest billions of euros in electric automobiles, ride-hailing and automated driving to qualify as the world’s leader in green transport by 2025.

Pointing company sources, German newspaper Handelsblatt noted over the weekend that the overhaul would also include stopping production of over 40 models.

Volkswagen currently develops about 340 car models across its portfolio.

A Volkswagen spokesman states, however, the number of models that would be ceased is yet to be decided. “A decision on how many models will be removed or ceased has not been taken yet,” he stated.
