It is a commonly known fact that hybrids are not fun-to-drive vehicles, but this Jetta might just be the exception. Released at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show, it is being powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline 4 cylinder engine combined with a 20kW electric motor, for a total power of 170 horsepower. This power is connected to a 7-speed DCT transmission. Being only a little heavier than the all-gasoline Jetta (there’s a difference of 221 pounds) the Hybrid Jetta reaches a curb weight of 3,300LBS.
The 0 to 60 time is 9.0 seconds, which is not peculiarly fast for a hybrid, but it’s acceptable. What is interesting is the fuel consumption, which stands at 45 mpg (estimated combined). That is just 5 mpg less than the Prius that shows that Volkswagen is approaching the mainstream Japanese Hybrid at high speeds.
The exterior design goes almost unchanged, as the Jetta Hybrid apparently gets a more aerodynamic shape (according to Volkswagen) and new “hybrid” metallic tags.
The EV mode can get the car running to up to 44mph, and for up to 1.2 miles, before the battery runs out. The 2013 Jetta Hybrid features break recharge (the batteries are being recharged when the brakes are activated).
Although the “fun-to-drive” factor doesn’t go anywhere near a high-powered all-gasoline vehicle, the fact that it’s saving the planet might compensate for some (not including yours truly).
An estimated starting price is $25,000, but Volkswagen still has to release some info. We’ll keep you posted.
