BMW announced today that its 528i sedan is abandoning the well-known naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine for a small-displacement turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
This new and more eco friendly engine produces more power than the outgoing 6-cylinder 240 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and a peak torque of 260 lb-ft at just 1,250 rpm. Mated to BMW’s 8-speed automatic transmission, the 2012 BMW 528i goes from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds (0.4 seconds quicker than the 2011 BMW 528i) and will deliver 15 percent better fuel-efficiency (pending EPA results).
Also new for the 2012 528i is a standard start/stop system. This feature switches off the engine when the car is stationary at traffic lights or in slow-moving traffic. An Eco Pro mode, which is activated by the driving experience switch, adjusts the engine map, heating, air-conditioning and mirror/seat heating to minimize fuel consumption. All these improvements combined are said to delieve up to 15 percent better fuel efficiency.
Beside this, like all other 5-Series models in the lineup, the 2012 BMW 528i will be offered with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, which has been updated to match the performance and character of the 528i. Newly updated, the 528i’s xDrive will be the first in BMW’s sedan lineup to feature individual rear braking for more neutral handling, hill descent control, and the ability to shift up to 80 percent of its torque to the rear wheels.
