Last year, BMW announced a new lighting technology on a vehicle model dubbed the BMW M4 Iconic Lights. Now, the luxury automotive brand from Germany has actually made the technology a reality. BMW has recently released a video that showcases OLED technology being used on the taillights of its M4 Iconic Lights concept car.
If you remember correctly, the M4 Iconic Lights concept from the Bavarian marquee first made its world premiere January this year. Besides the OLED taillights, the car also benefits from laser headlamps. Speaking of the OLED taillights, these lights make good use of a number of organic light emitting diodes (LEDs), each of which measures no thicker than 1.4 mm. What makes these OLED taillights very appealing is the fact that they can be individually controlled. This makes it possible for the Bavarian marquee to come up with several variations of lighting effects for its future vehicles.
If you are planning to buy a BMW vehicle, you may as well wait a little longer. Thing is, the company has officially announced that it will be equipping the OLED taillights soon to its M models. Well, the company’s upcoming M2 model will be making its debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show event in September this year and a lot of people are sure enough this car will be the first commercial vehicle to feature that OLED technology from BMW for the lighting clusters of its rear fascia. Besides the upcoming BMW M2, the OLED taillights may also be coming to the BMW M4 GTS which is scheduled to make its debut August this year. The latter will even feature a water injection system like the one used on the company’s M4 MotoGP safety car.
