BMW will bundle its battery cell proficiency in a new skills center, the German luxury automaker stated on Friday, adding it would invest 200 million euros ($ 237 million) in the site during the next four years.
“By producing battery-cell prototypes, we can evaluate and fully understand the cell’s value-creation processes. With this build-to-print proficiency, we can allow potential suppliers to produce cells to our specs,” stated Oliver Zipse, a BMW board member.
“The knowledge we acquire is extremely important to us, no matter whether we produce the battery cells ourselves, or not.”
The center are set to open in early 2019, BMW stated.
