The existing Mercedes manufacturing units are to be used for production of new electric vehicles of German automaker Daimler.
The group informed their plan of combining it with successive production of vehicles with combustion engines. The chief of cars production at Mercedes-Benz Markus Schaefer on Wednesday announced they were regulating the necessary investment and benefiting from the electrical mobility advantage with this tie up.
By the end of 2025 Daimler has plans to launch more than 10 electric cars under the Mercedes-Benz and Smart brand. They foresee 15 to 25 percent of zero-emission vehicles accounting for total sale at Mercedes. The electric car manufacturing under the new EQ electric vehicle brand would begin at Bremen a northern German city.
Daimler is preparing to invest up to $10.8 billion for building electric vehicles. Deputies representing the labors are trying to convince the company to invest major share of the venture in Germany. Expertise centers for the electric vehicle production as announced by the company on Wednesday are factories in Germany’s Bremen, Rastatt and Sindelfingen and Smart model factory in France’s Hambach.
The labor committee appreciated the initiative taken by the company to provide German plants an opportunity to take part in the transition to electric vehicle. The committees Chief Michael Brecht said though there were challenges the jobs of people were secure. Daimler approved to retain 125 temporary workers for a year in its biggest unit at Sindelfingen that has 25,000 employees. The labors council decided to work on flexible hours in return.
Sindelfingen was announced on Wednesday to be the second plant joining the venture.
