Slowly but certainly, the automotive industry is seeing a switch from the conventional vehicle engine to the more eco-friendly option, the electric engine. It seems that both US automakers GM and Ford do not want to miss saving the planet as well. It is reported that Tony Earley, CEO Pacific Gas and Electric, who also happens to be a board member of Ford, has revealed that both Ford and GM, through its Chevrolet brand, are planning to offer electric versions of the Ford F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks.
The plan was revealed during the luncheon of the Detroit Economic Club and the plan is that both of the aforementioned car manufacturers will convert their bestselling pickup trucks into electric vehicles, the type of vehicles that is friendlier to the environment and can potentially save the Planet Earth as well. However, according to Earley, it is not going to be easy at all to accomplish such a plan. As a matter of fact, it is quite a difficult task to accomplish, yet it is something that both companies are determined and have to do.
Tony Early explains that in order to accomplish the goal of these two companies, it will be necessary to make a pretty significant investment. In fact, they may even have to involve the government in this case. Well, this is actually not too surprising at all. It is often the case that the government will have to step up in something like this. Otherwise, both companies may not be able to cope with the high development costs.
However, when asked for confirmation, GM denies any official plan of building an electric Chevy Silverado pickup. Through Kevin Kelly, the company’s electrification communications manager, General Motors, as reported by the Automotive News, claims that the company has simply gone through some brainstorming sessions and these are just informal sessions, nothing more.
