There have been so many rumors that have been doing rounds that BMW will produce their M5 and M6 in all-wheel-drive (AWD) but so far nothing was confirmed and there was no certainty about it. However, now it seems that it could very soon happen as BMW’s M division chief Dr. Friedrich Nitschke has recently confirmed that the company is working on plans for an M5 and M6 all-wheel-drive future.
Other car makers such as Mercedes’ AMG and Audi’s RS models already boast AWD in their line-up which has left the Bavarian automaker playing catchup. However, it is still going to be at least a couple of years until we see the M5 AWD and M6 AWD. The M5 is first in-line to receive this AWD technology, following a year on from the next generation 5-series that is expected in around 2016 or 2017.
The M division already has the X5 M and the X6 M, but both are based on an all-wheel-drive architecture while the M5 and M6 are based on a rear-wheel-drive system. Nitschke also mentioned that the M3 and M4 will never stray from their rear-wheel-drive architecture as he termed it as fantastic.
