90 Years of Maybach- Part 4

by Sweta

End of the second world war:

For the automobile brand Maybach’s only 20-year history ended with the expiry of the type SW 42 with independent suspension and an innovative 140-hp engine in the middle of the Second World War.

After the war was at the Maybach-vehicle division as unlukrativer branch of the production line alive again. The manufacturer of large diesel ships and trains merged in 1966 with the Mercedes-Benz Maybach Mercedes-Benz engine to engine construction. Three years later the company in engines and turbine-Union Friedrichshafen (MTU) has been renamed. Thus the name Maybach was apparently finally history.

Brought back to life:

Then the surprise: A few weeks before corporate executives could Ferdinand Piech, the Volkswagen brand for the world and take over temporarily as Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz wanted to bring in 1997 the automotive history of Maybach back to life. This made her debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz Maybach study. Five years later, Maybach has been revitalized with the prestigious limousines featuring 57 and 62 as an independent brand.

Up to 1,000 units per year would Jürgen E. Schrempp, the chief selling the former DaimlerChrysler AG, the Group’s flagship exorbitantly expensive, the way to the profane Mercedes-Benz S-class-based, worldwide. A dream that was never realized. Awareness and appeal of the Maybach brand had vanished in recent decades and could not be recovered by some spectacular car premieres at the legendary ocean liner Queen Elizabeth II or super-fast coupe studies, such as the eccentric Exelero.

Only 200 vehicles per year:

Last year were in the purpose built factory only about 200 units of the least expensive sedans built € 405 000. When in 2013 the last specimen rolled with the type of paragraph 57 or 62 from the halls of the Maybach, a new generation of Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman version in the wings to take over the throne and the automobile class is not entirely to leave the brands Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

Just as 60 years ago, when the Mercedes-Benz 300 “Adenauer” inherited the Maybach limousines. The best thing about luxury is only just enough, if the true profitability.
