Tesla is seeing another potential competitor in the electric vehicle market.
Polestar, Volvo’s standalone electric vehicle brand, is revealing its Polestar 2 model, a five-door car that will have two electric motors. According to the company, the car is aimed to travel up to 275 miles on a single charge with its 78kWh battery. With about 408 horsepower, the car can go from 0 to 60 mph under five seconds.
The launch edition of the Polestar 2 is going to cost $63,000 before $7,500 in federal incentives. Production of the car will start in China in early 2020, and potential customers can pre-order online at polestar.com.
Polestar stated its car is aimed to compete with Tesla’s Model 3. Recently, Tesla announced a $35,000 version of its electric car. Earlier, the Model 3 had a starting cost of about $44,000. Tesla’s pricier models, the Model S and Model X, have starting costs of $94,000 and $97,000, respectively.
Everything about the car “has been designed and engineered with passion and dedication,” Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath stated. “As an electric performance brand, and through the forthcoming release of a portfolio of fully electric cars, Polestar is determined to address the world’s air quality challenges.”
The EV is also going have an infotainment system functioned by Android. With this installation, Google services — including Google Assistant and Google Maps — will be embedded into the vehicle. Furthermore, the car will include phone-as-key technology.
