BMW came up with quite a surprise, publicizing detailed illustrations of the production model of the brand new 6-Series Convertible, while the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupe was premiering in North America at the 2010 Los Angeles International Auto Show. The production model, being tipped for a 2012 release is all set to hit the US streets in spring
2011.
Compared to the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupe, the production version of the car is an absolute marvel. The production model is 4,894 millimeters (192.6 in.) long, which is about 74 millimeters (2.9 in.) longer than the Concept series model, whereas the extended
wheelbase has been stretched to 2,855 millimeters (112.4 in.). The car is 39 millimeters (1.5 in.) greater than its predecessor in breadth, measures about 1,894 millimeters (74.5 in.) across, while the height of the car has been reduced by 9 millimeters (0.35 in.), thus now becoming 1,365 mm (53.7 in.).
BMW has stated that the static torsional rigidity of the new car has been increased by about 50 percent more than its counterpart.
Similar to the previous convertibles versions from BMW, the 6 series also has a fabric roof which is retractable in a mere 24 seconds and can open even faster in 19 seconds. This can also be done while the car is on the run up to a speed of 25 mph (40 km/h). With a very light weight design of the roof the weight of this brand new convertible has been reduced to a half compared to its counterpart.
The four seater convertible has a storage space of 300 liters (10.6 cu. ft.) while the roof is open. According to BMW sources, the space is enough to gulp in two 46-inch golf bags and a business case. When the roof is retracted, a storage space of 350 liters (12.3 cu. ft.) is available. So, the car does not fail to amuse.
The new set of wheels is presented as 650i, consisting of BMW’s latest venture in terms of car engines, the 4.4-liter V8 engine offering direct injection and turbocharging technology. The engine can produce a power of 400hp at 5,500 to 6,400 rpm, with the torque reaching a maximum of 450 lb-ft at 1,750 to 4,500 rpm. BMW is also offering a combination of the all-new 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission or a traditional 6-speed manual gearbox with the magical engine.
Independent of manual or automatic gear systems, the car reaches 0 to 60 mph [96 km/h] in a whopping 4.9 seconds. The maximum speed of the car is limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). A straight-six turbo unit, along with an M6 with a turbocharged V8 may be available with the car in special markets.
The six series convertible does not compromise on its modern reputation, with features like standard Brake Energy Regeneration system, Driving Dynamics Control and LED fog lamps and lights. The best feature though is the Active Roll Stabilization, which reduces body roll at risky high-speed corners and in abrupt direction changes and turns as well.
Well, for those who think BMW has bared it all, BMW has promised to come with more. A more detailed report will be produced by the German company on the countdown to the car’s eagerly awaited launch.
