Ford has stated it will mass-produce a fully automated self-driving car without a steering wheel by 2021.
The strong passion was described by the company’s president, Mark Fields, at an event in Palo Alto, California.
Ford said it would double its investment in its research centre in the city, along with making substantial financial investments in technology companies in the autonomy industry.
The company said the automobile would be used by customers by 2021.
It stated this was more than likely as part of an Uber-like ride-sharing service – however one that does not need a human driver.
“As you can think of, the experience inside an automobile where you don’t need to take control changes everything,” stated Mr Fields to the BBC.
The statement, explained as “transformational” by Mr Fields, signified a period when Ford sees itself, particularly in cities, as a company that offers an ad-hoc service rather than focusing solely on selling the vehicles to the public.
In recent times Ford has informed itself as a technology company rather than simply a automaker, and on Tuesday it truly began to seem like one.
