The U.S. Transportation Department stated car manufacturers recalled a record high 53.2 million vehicles in last year in the United States in part due to a massive expansion in callback to replace Takata air bag inflators.
Under aggressive imposition by the Obama administration, automakers issued a record-setting 927 recall campaigns, boost of 7 percent over the previous high set in 2015. Last year’s recall of 53.2 million total automobiles topped the former all time high of 51.1 million set in 2015, the department stated.
This is the third straight year that US auto safety recalls have established a new record and crossed the mark of 50 million. In the last 20 years, yearly US auto recalls amounted from 10.2 million to 30.8 million.
The rise in recalls originated US traffic deaths have boosted. US traffic deaths increased 8 percent in 2015, the highest yearly boost in a half-century, and initial estimates show they increased roughly again in 2016.
