Canalys’ latest research report shows more than 3.5 million passenger cars equipped with Level 2 (L2) autonomous driving functions were sold worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2020.
According to the Society of Automotive Engineers, L2 self-driving vehicles need the full participation of drivers, mainly including functions such as ACC automatic cruise, automatic car following, automatic parking, among others
The reported data shows that in the fourth quarter of 2020, 1.2 million L2 autonomous vehicles were sold in the United States, 832,000 in China, 628,000 in Europe, 190,000 in Japan, and 600,000 in the rest of the world.
In terms of the usability rate of L2 autonomous vehicles, we see it at 30% in the United States, 20% in Japan, 19% in Europe, 12% in China, and the rest of the world is also 12%.
Together with that, an overall amount of of 11.2 million L2 self-driving cars were sold in 2020, showing an increase of 78% over 2019.
Canalys chief analyst Chris Jones commented that L2 autonomous driving has been widely popularized and is no longer an exclusive function of certain high-end brand car models.
“The premium brands have been overtaken by mainstream brands such as Honda and Toyota who now sell the most cars with level 2 driving functionality. They have suites of ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) features, including level 2 driving as standard in most of their popular models. Other leading car makers such as Ford and VW Group have followed,” Jones added.
