The Japanese automotive lobby said on Thursday it has selected Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda to serve a rare third term as its chairman to lead the industry.

Toyoda, 65, a member of Toyota Motor’s founding family, has served as the head of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) since 2018. Most past chairpersons have served a single two-year term.

“I accepted the role after receiving views that (the industry) needs continuity … to overcome this difficult stage,” Toyoda said on an online news conference.

Third term will see him in the position through May of 2024.

Founded in 1967, JAMA serves as a platform for the automakers in Japan to share technological advancements and practices.
