The Shanghai Show held recently had the new BMW M5 on display albeit in a concept car guise. However, the car is unique in that it would be the first M5 to come with a turbocharged engine and that too with the option of an all-wheel drive. This is what British car magazine Autocar has reported. As per report, an unnamed company insider has said that the all wheel drive model would be built around the M5 that is powered by a V8. Technical details thereafter are scant.
There are also reports about a long-wheelbase M5 being made by BMW specifically meant for the Chinese market. The source stated, “The long-wheelbase platform is reserved for standard versions of the 5-series sold in the Chinese market. There are no existing plans for an M5 on this structure.”
For power the M5 would be using a modified version of the 4.4-liter V8 twin turbocharged engine that is fitted on the X5M and X6M. The engine though has been tuned for delivering higher output than the 555 hp that it delivers when fitted on the two performance SUVs. The production car is expected to be on display at the Frankfurt auto show to be held later this year. The company is waiting to spring a surprise specially in the power output, details of which it is not letting out right away.
The manufactures have stated that the car would be 25 percent more fuel efficient than its predecessor while also being more powerful. Fuel efficiency has been achieved by incorporating features like automatic stop-start system, brake energy regeneration system and on-demand auxiliary functions for the water pump into the car, which has been the work of the BMW’s Efficient Dynamics department. For transmission there is the seven speed dual clutch automatic transmission system that has been incorporated into the car and this too has its role to play in attaining a higher fuel efficiency.
