The company has released a new video which looks back at the development of the original Shelby GT 350.
Actually the start was not very bright and stellar when in the year 1964 Ford Vice President Lee Iacocca called Carroll Shelby and asked him to make a Mustang race car. Shelby responded by calling the Mustang a “secretary’s car” and saying he didn’t think it could be done. But Iacocca wasn’t disappointed and told Shelby to take the V8 and increase the output to 300-350 hp (223- 261 kW). He suggested various other changes such as change in the brakes, the suspension and take out the rear seats.
After the work got completed, they started debating as to what the model should be named and there were quite a few suggestions. But in the end, Shelby came up with something strange when he called the shop foreman and asked him to count the number of steps from the corner of the building to the Van Nuys airport.
The shop foreman actually walked and counted and it came to 347 steps. On this count Shelby decided to round up and call the car the GT 350. What in interesting story it is!
