The program for downsizing fuel conpsumption is being continued by Mercedes, by bringing more fuel efficient engines, smaller V8s and now a “back-to-basis” idea has struck them, adopting straight six engines to its vehicles.
The straight-six engines were introduced much earlier than the V6 engines. While the first straight-six was manufactured in 1903 by Spyker, it was 1950 before a production V6 engine was introduced.
More than that, due to the fact that they remain faithful to the downsizing strategy, they are planning to launch a new twin-turbocharged V-8 displacing just 4.0-liters, programmed in the year 2015.
It is highly possible, according to a source from Mercedes-Benz engineering departments, that the automaker will as soon as possible start producing straight-sixes, and also there is a chance for these engines to be produced in both single and twin-turbo configurations, in order to replace their V8 engines.
The new straight-sex engines will power most of the Mercedes-Benz’s larger cars, such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class variants and M-Class and M-Class derived SUVs, just like the current crop ot V^ power-plants.
There is appearently nothing to do for us but wait and see, if Mercedes’s plans are going to realisation, and if so, how they are going to behave.
