New technical information for the Subaru BRZ is now out. According to its manufacturer, the car will have the lowest center of gravity of any production car when it hits the showrooms next summer. The car’s compact 2.0 liter Boxer engine can be mounted even lower in the chassis than would normally be allowed in the four-wheel drive layout thanks to its rear-wheel-drive configuration.
Subaru has confirmed that the the flat-four unit will incorporate a Toyota direct fuel-injection system. The car is co-developed with Toyota although majority of the engineering work has been accomplished by Subaru. The BRZ will have a power output of just a little lower than 300bhp compared with the FT-86 that has an output of only 200bhp.
The full specs of the Subaru BRZ is still unknown. Even the new MD of the Subaru U.K. does not know and has only seen a clay model of the car. Some people in the know though has confirmed that the BRZ will have a grille and bumper that are totally different from its Toyota counterparts. It is also known that a topless car is under consideration and a roadster version could also be in the works. Pricing is also still unknown. Interested parties though can expect that it would cost pretty much the same as the Volkswagen Sciroco that is considered as the main rival of the BRZ.
Even though they are not aware of the final price of the car nor have seen actual photos of it, fans have already started registering with Subaru dealers to be the first to know when more details of it becomes available. The Subaru BRZ may help fill in a new niche for the Japanese car maker but the company though plans to maintain its focus on lifestyle products such as the new XV crossover.
The Subaru BRZ will be launched at the Tokyo show later this month.
