Parents that think about their teen driving at some point might be terrified. Teens have the highest rates of accidents due to inexperience driving in certain situations. Distractions are prevalent for people of all ages but texting and driving is an epidemic that teens have a huge part in. Setting rules for your teen driving needs to be done as allowing too much could result in disaster. The last thing that any parent wants is their teen to hurt themselves or potentially injure/kill another driver or passenger. Rules are going to differ from teen to teen as some teens have a rebellious streak while others just want to drive to the movies. Below are rules that should be staples of any parent’s requirements for their teen to drive.

Grades Should Stay High to Retain Driving Privileges

State governments even get involved if a teen is failing or has been skipping school in terms of their driving privileges. Your teen’s license can be suspended if they are using their new freedom to skip school regularly. Education is important even if your teen is not going to take the college path. The grades are not quite as important as the discipline it takes to study, complete assignments and pay attention. There should be different grade requirements even between two teenagers as people are gifted in different ways. One teen could be incredible in the arts while struggling with school while another thinks school couldn’t be easier.

No Drinking and Driving……Ever

Substance abuse is common among teens with a number of teens choosing alcohol as it is considered a social drug. The fact that this can be bought by someone of age makes it easier to find than illegal substances. You do not want your teen facing prison time due to a drunk driving accident. One mistake behind the wheel when drinking can be fatal so there should be a zero-tolerance policy instituted

Curfew Should Align with State Laws

Curfew has been a source of issues for what seems like centuries between teens and their parents. Driving does give a parent the upper hand due to state laws on curfew. Your teen could lose their driving privileges if they are caught out multiple times after curfew and are not on the way to some sort of job. The curfew in some locations differs between 16 and 17 while others differ between 17 and 18. States have different age requirements for teens that want to drive with some teens getting their driving permit at 15 in states like Florida. There are other options if your teen wants a later curfew than the law allows, they can be picked up and driven by another person.

Do Not Allow Too Many People in the Car

Distractions are prevalent in a vehicle whether it is loud music, an incoming text, or people talking too loudly. Limiting the number of people your teen can have in the car at one time is important. You do not want your teen to turn into a taxi for others as it could turn into a huge liability. You do not want your teen to be involved in an accident where someone is seriously hurt or dies. Too many people in a car can mean there is not a seatbelt for everyone which could result in deadly consequences. There are so many options for devices that you can use without your hands so your teen can answer your call even if they are on the road.

Teach Your Teen What to do in Case of an Accident

The truth is that your teen will most likely be involved in some form of an accident within their first few years of driving. There are safe drivers who are involved in accidents due to the negligence of another driver. Your teen needs to know what to do in case of an accident as it could protect the entire family in a legal sense. The last thing anyone wants is your teen to panic and take the blame for an accident that wasn’t their fault in any shape or form. If your teen has been injured at the fault of someone else finding a top law firm like SteinLaw that handles car accidents. Whether you are looking for a New York City or Miami car accident lawyer, this is not the time to opt for firms that do not have the appropriate experience.

A teen starting to drive can be a blessing and a curse for parents. The blessing aspect is the extra time available not having to take your teen to practices, rehearsals, or to their friend’s homes. The negative part of this is that you will be constantly worrying if you know they will be on the road.
