Vauxhall has recently made an announcement that they have made an attempt to set 12 world and 6 national speed endurance records at the Millbrook Proving Grounds. This record setting attempt took place on 5th October when two Astra 2.0 CDTis embarked on a 24 hour endurance challenge on the track’s high speed bowl.
While the company has remained silent about what records they have attempted to break, Vauxhall says that the cars traveled a distance of 3,000 miles (4,828 km) at an average speed of 125 mph (201 kmph). This means it would beat a previous speed record of 100.2 mph (161.2 kmph). Vauxhall further stated that the stress on the cars was intense but they didn’t burn any oil and had a downtime of just 22 minutes due to driver changes, refueling stops and two tire changes (one per car).
Vauxhall PR Manager Simon Hucknall was quoted saying, “We chose the 165PS 2.0 CDTi Astra for its mix of strong performance and economy but to be subjected to 24 hours of flat-out driving on the challenging top lane of Millbrook’s High Speed Bowl it needed to be ultra-reliable, predictable and safe for our drivers.”
