Jaguar Land Rover is the largest automotive manufacturer in the UK. Despite currently being on slightly shaky grounds due to the UK’s decision to exit the European Union, the company had a good year in 2016. Although Jaguar Land Rover chief Ralph Speth has warned of the damage Brexit could do to the company, the manufacturer has still been able to invest time and money into charitable projects. Their latest is an initiative in Kenya which aims to provide safe and clean lighting for people living there. The project, in collaboration with ClimateCare, has been set up to bring clean lighting to 1.2 million people in the East African country.

The global effort to tackle climate change was recently dealt a blow, with the US president Donald Trump’s announcement that the country would be withdrawing from the Paris Agreement. Many experts agree that it’s countries like Kenya and other developing nations, particularly those in hot climates, which will be the first to see the greater effects of climate change. It is important, therefore that these countries are able to join the fight against climate change and receive assistance from other nations to do so. In fact, every nation in Africa has signed the Paris Agreement. Apart from the US, only war-torn Syria and Nicaragua, in Central America (who wanted the agreement to go further) decided against signing the agreement.

Land Rover’s initiative, which is called Lighting Up Lives, is committed to providing communities with affordable and sustainable technology. It aims to offer families more lighting each day and to replace the dangerous use of kerosene fuel.

Jaguar Land Rover have also made commitments to the environment in regards to their own operations. They want to work toward a zero-emissions future and have recently moved to 100% renewable energy at their UK facilities. They have also installed the UK’s largest rooftop solar setup at their West Midland’s Engine Manufacturing Centre. What’s more, the manufacturing and delivery of their vehicles are both carried out in responsible ways too.

They help to cut down on the impact of delivering and exporting vehicles using measures like delivering them straight to dealers. Consumers could, in turn, play a part by looking for Cars & Co Land Rover deals to have a car delivered straight to their home, instead of visiting a dealership. Jaguar Land Rover aims to use sustainable materials and to design their vehicles with fuel efficiency in mind. They use a “Life Cycle Assessment” to try to ensure their cars are as sustainable as possible.

It’s important for automotive manufacturers like Jaguar Land Rover to be some of the companies taking the lead on addressing climate change. While individual people can play their part, big businesses need to take the initiative. It’s a global effort that can benefit the whole planet but could help some countries in particular. Those like Kenya, which could feel the impact of climate change sooner, can benefit from both the sustainability and affordability of new technologies.

Several auto companies are beginning to take action to reduce their environmental impact. Along with the use of electric and hybrid cars, it could make a big difference.
