Bernie Ecclestone has recently revealed that he is thinking about securing the future of the Nurburgring’s formula one race, by buying the besieged circuit.
The track has been under financial problems for some time now and so now has been put up for sale. This weekend’s round at the famous track in the Eifel only survived on the 2013 calendar because the F1 chief executive significantly reduced his sanctioning fee.
When asked by Die Welt newspaper about the Nurburgring’s future beyond the German grand prix on Sunday, Ecclestone stated that it was quite possible that he will buy the circuit and he has been thinking about it. He further stated that if he does buy it, it would mean the German grand prix is secure in the future, which is after taking into account the existing contracts with Hockenheim.
The 82-year-old Briton said he will make his final decision in a few months. He even insisted that he would under any situation or circumstances, the next year’s German grand prix would be at Hockenheim only. There were binding contracts and he would like to keep to them.
Ecclestone also said he is hoping that two new races in America will complement the now annual Austin race, namely in Long Beach and New York (New Jersey).
