Criminal proceedings have been initiated by Luxembourg over Volkswagen for the diesel emission scandal. Even after 17 months the automaker continues struggle to overcome the damages caused. On Monday the European Union country said they were set to take legal action against people involved in the production of EA 189 engines made by Volkswagen Audi. Luxembourg authorities did the testing and certification of the faulty engine fitted with illegitimate defeat device software used to conceal the toxic emission level.
Majority of the Volkswagen cars admitted in the United States were fitted with the software. Francois Bausch Infrastructure minister of Luxembourg told reporters they had decided to launch a lawsuit against unknown people due to the possibility of usage of the illegal device. The ministry portrayed themselves as victims of fraud. Audi and Volkswagen haven’t commented on the issue. The shares of Volkswagen went down by 2.2 percent at 141.69 euros.
Investigation And Legal Proceedings
The European Commission feels the member states of European countries haven’t taken necessary actions to prevent emission tests cheating. Seven EU countries are under scrutiny including Luxembourg.
Officials in some European countries feel the loophole in the law might be responsible for the scandal. However other countries are continuing their investigation and legal steps. Deutsche See became the first German customer to sue Volkswagen for falsifying vehicles they leased as environment friendly.
