Mercedes to employ new naturally aspirated V8 engine to power AMGs

by Alex

It is the twin turbocharged 5.5 liter V8 engine that has been selected by Mercedes Benz to render service on the S63 AMG, CL63 AMG and CLS63 AMG cars. The range of power that would be delivered depending on the model in which the engine is fitted is expected to vary from 525 to 577 hp.

The Frankfurt motor show scheduled next year would tell us a story of a different sort when we see the successor to the SKL55 AMG at the show. This new performance roadster as per company sources is expected to get a naturally aspirated version of Mercedes Benz’s new 5.5-liter V8 engine. Details of this engine are yet a closely guarded secret.

It is expected that the new powertrain would deliver 422 hp which is 62 horses more than what the 5.4 liter V8 delivers and is used on the SLK55 AMG which is in the outgoing phase. Fuel consumption is also expected to be lower in the new engine due to the 90 degree engine having a cylinder cut off mechanism that is built into the engine.

There is yet the other talk that goes on amongst insiders of Mercedes who opine that the AMG would retain the naturally aspirated 6.2 liter V8 in the face lifted C63 AMG set to hit North America in early 2011.

The 5.5 liter V8 engine is however expected to be fitted on the AMG variant of the upcoming two door CLK replacement.

The C55 AMG is the one that is going to lead the C-Class coupe line up and there would be the hardcore Black Series model which is aimed at the BMW M3 GTS.
