Whilst we all know that insurance is an important part of car registrations, a legal requirement, in fact, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t frustrating when you have to pay out for it. Insurance premiums vary from person to person, depending on their circumstances as well as the vehicle that they wish to drive.

Knowing what things can have an impact will really go a long way to helping you to avoid them and in turn, save money, but where do you start? One thing that you might not think about is your number plates, but what impact do they actually have and does it make a difference if they are personalized or not?

Can you cover for your personalized number plate?

Whilst some private number plates only cost around the £250 mark, there are those that are incredibly valuable and that they want to keep as protected as possible. This means that many people wonder whether or not their car insurance can also contain an option to cover their personalized number plates also.

The answer is, there are some insurance providers which will cover number plates, however, these are few and far between, so in order to find them, you are going to need to search hard on the database of insurance companies.

Do they increase the insurance premiums?

It makes sense that having a personalized number plate will increase the amount that you need to ensure your car for, and therefore you can find that your premiums go up accordingly. But really, the is the only impact that having a personalized number plates is going to have on the premiums is that you need to ensure the car for more.

A car that has personalized number plates is not seen at a greater risk of being stolen or damaged than a car that does not have personalized number plates. In fact, a car that has personalized number plates is often less likely to be stolen. Some may say that the reason for this is because a personalized number plate is incredibly easy to spot, which means that the cars are then left alone.

What happens if you make a claim?

We all hope that we won’t ever have to make a claim on our cars, but chances are that there is going to come a time that we do. If you have a personalized number plate on your car, then there are some things that you need to think about when it comes to making a claim.

If you want to, you can repurchase the registration number from the insurance company at no more than the settlement price. However, if the vehicle has already been scrapped along with the number plate, then there is nothing that can be done about it.

If a car with a personalized number plate is stolen and then is not found, then you will have to wait up to 12 months to receive the number plate back. You also need to be able to prove that the car is yours and that it had a valid MOT too.

Don’t get a headache about personalized number plate, things are usually much simpler than you realize. Legal number plate makers can also help with the same.
