Production of the Mazda RX-8 has been stopped in the factory site of Hiroshima where the cars were being made for shipping to UK. There are just a hundred units of the Mazda RX-8 left for being picked by people who so desire. The reason for stoppage of the production has been attributed to the Euro 5 emission standards that have been laid out and which this car’s rotary engine does not adhere to. The total global sales of the car have been 186,632 and off them 14 percent have been sold in the UK alone since its launch in 2003.
What would be left would be the Mazda RX 8 of the R3 model which has the 231 hp engine installed on it. This model has the ability to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds flat. Pricing for the car has been fixed at £25,540. Mazda dealers have a financing package also available for customers to take where they have to pay back at 5.9 percent APR in a span of 36 months with validity of the offer expiring on 30 Sept 2010.
Mark Cameron, the sales director of Mazda UK says “Over the next couple of months drivers will be presented with a rare opportunity to acquire one of the very last RX-8s available in the UK. Its immense driver appeal, the world’s only rotary-powered production car is still a head-turner, with tremendous road presence and styling that still looks fresh. A few lucky customers are going to play a part in the grand finale of this motoring legend.”
There is high probability of the Japanese automaker coming out with a new sports car very soon. Whether the car is going to be a follow through of the four seater RX8 or some model of a sportier variant is a case to be seen. This car is also expected to have the rotary engine once again installed in it and with better fuel efficiency.
