Mercedes considered partnerships with BMW, Fiat & Volkswagen – report

by David Bond

Daimler has recently revealed that the company has previously explored partnerships with auto giants including BMW, Fiat and Volkswagen.

Speaking during a conference call, Daimler CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche mentioned about the fact and said “When we were planning the current generation of front-wheel-drive vehicles we were entertaining a number of discussions with BMW, with Fiat, with VW to check whether it makes sense to do something together.” He further said that the company decided that the benefits would be marginal (if they go for partnerships) so they finally decided to develop the MFA platform by themselves.

Despite eschewing a partnership during the platform’s development, the MFA architecture eventually underpins the 2015 Infiniti Q30. This is a result of a wide-ranging strategic alliance which was signed with Renault-Nissan in the year 2010.

Well we do not know if the decision taken by Daimler is correct or not but if the numbers are in favour of the company we would surely applaud the decision of not partnering with such great giants.
