For quite some years we are witnessing at the muscle car wars with either the Ford Mustang or the Chevrolet Camaro coming out on top every time. In this “war” these two car makers were able to stay abreast of the advances the other has made this way resulting similar lineups and no constant top dog.
Designed for NHRA Stock and Super Stock competition, the Mustang Cobra Jet was introduced for the first time as a 2008 model and it has gone unopposed by Chevy in the world of turnkey factory drag racers. Well, now, according to LSXTV in true competitive style, its main opponent, Chevrolet will announce their answer to the CJ – a Stock Eliminator Camaro, at this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas at the beginning of November.
According to some rumors, the American car maker is taking under consideration two options: to strip down the portly showroom version of the Camaro or to build a completely new car.
Considering that the production Camaro SS’ naturally aspirated LS3 matches the blown CJ 5.4 in terms of horsepower, GM Performance Parts has a lot more cool stuff in their toybox than Ford Racing. However, despite this apparent advantage, chances are the new Camaro will not be as light as the Cobra Jet so Chevrolet will have to come packing more heat under the hood to obtain the same performance numbers as the Ford model. Beside this power boost, the new model might come with upgraded drag-specific suspension, chassis, and brakes.
Anyway, at this time, it’s all just speculation beyond the rumor that the Stock Eliminator Camaro will be unveiled in just a few short weeks. Stay tuned for more details.
