The Vice President of Scion Doug Murtha has recently claimed to WardsAuto that its Scion xB will discontinue production by the end of 2015. The xB made the became synonymous with the Scion brand with sales peaking at 61,306 units sold in 2006. However, the second-generation model wasn’t as kind to the nameplate, launching in 2007 as a 2008 model with sales dropping year after year. Despite this, the sales of the the Scion xB skyrocketted in 2012 over 2011, only 16,583 xB compacts were sold last year. That number pales in comparison to one of its main competitors, the Kia Soul which sold 145,316 units.
Scion is set to release its new models the iA a sub-compact sedan and the and the iM five-seater hatchback. There isn’t a direct replacement of the xB but Doug Murtha thinks that the iM will eventually take the place of the famous box-shaped xB. Interestingly, the competitors of the xB, the Nissan Cube and Honda Element have also been said to shut down in production, so it can be said that the age of boxy-shaped cars has come to an end.
