Two people are dead and one was injured after a single-vehicle crash on early Monday morning in Edmonton.

A patrol officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on a black 2014 Ford Focus just after 2:30 a.m. near Whitemud Drive and 91 Street. The owner of the vehicle was listed as a suspended driver.

The car failed to stop at the sign, and instead, it fled at a high rate of speed down Whitemud Drive, exiting the freeway at the Calgary Trail ramp.

Police did not pursue but found the sedan a short time later off the ramp, where it seemed to have lost control and hit a light pole.

The woman driving and another passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

EMS treated and took a passenger to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Edmonton Police Service is investigating the crash.
