Audi R8 Spyder versions on the works, V-8 lowers sticker price

by Ionut Dragomir

Audi has rolled out three versions of their super car the R8. They have the older V-8 with 4.2L displacement and a 5.2L V-10 variant which are available as a hardtop coupe or as the cool Spyder convertible.

According to insiders, there are two more versions being worked on by the carmaker. There might be an upcoming RS variant which might be revealed before the end of the run of the R8’s and a cheaper version of the R8 Spyder that will have a V-8 engine under its hood.

The R8 Spyder is the most expensive car in the Audi garage and is only available with a V-10 powerplant that outputs 525 horsepower. The R8 Spyder is set to hit dealerships before the end of this year.

The plan to make the R8 Spyder cheaper is to use the V8 4.2L engine from its cousin the original R8. The price can be sliced by as much as $30,000 if the V-10 will be replaced. The peak output of the Spyder will still be monstrous at 420 horsepower which will be paired with a six speed manual or an automatic gearbox.
The R8 Spyder will roll out of the Audi assembly lines by fall this year while the V8 variant will be available on the early part of 2011 the soonest.

The R8 RS which will have a V-10 twin turbocharged that can roar up to 600 horsepower. This version can be expected towards the end of 2011.
