Iremamber Sykap a 16-year-old boy of Aiea, Hawaii, died Monday from multiple gunshot wounds by police during a car chase after he rammed two police cars in Honolulu.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office on Wednesday provided his name.
Police Chief Susan Ballard said Sykap was driving a stolen white Honda Civic that was linked to burglary, purse snatching, car theft, and armed robbery.
Officers pursued the car as it accelerated west on a highway and freeway, at one point driving into oncoming traffic, officials said.
The driver rammed two police cars before crashing into a fence and landing in a canal, according to the officials.
Before the car ended up in the canal, officers shot at it. Some of the occupants of the vehicle later ran from the canal with officers running after them.
Sykap was admitted to a hospital where he died. The five other occupants of the car ranged aged from 14 to 22.
The three officers who used their guns in this incident were put on administrative leave.
