Fiat is planning for an Abarth variant, called Fiat 124 Spider, which will be based on the Mazda MX-5 Miata. There is no confirmation on what type of engine the Fiat 124 Spider will use. The standard model will be powered by a 1.4 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that is capable of generating a maximum horsepower of 200 hp. The high end model will potentially be equipped with an 1.75 turbo engine that is also used in Alfa Romeo 4C. The estimated travel time for 0-100 km/h is to be lesser than 6 seconds. The Fiat 124 Spider was originally planned to be an Alfa brand but it switched brand to Fiat later.

Fiat has expressed that the car will not have an engine with a performance that is higher than the MX-5. The Fiat 124 Spider will feature the lightweight SkyActive chassis. It will be the first roadster for Fiat since they stop production for the Fiat Barchetta in 2005. It is expected that the Fiat 124 Spider will enter into the market in 2016. The Abarth variant will enter into the market shortly after the launch of the Fiat 124 Spider. Alfredo Altavilla, the CEO of Fiat promises superb performance for the roadster. According to Altavilla, Abarth is a car about performance so they won’t focus too much on the colors and trims.
