Three people were killed and the other two were injured following a head-on car crash on Monday afternoon in Bel Air, Maryland.

The two-vehicle crash took place around 1:40 p.m. on the Bel Air bypass on Route 1 near Spring Rock Road, when a 54-year-old identified as Mary Yvonne Mejia, was heading north on the bypass in a Toyota SUV and crossed into the southbound lane before hitting a Honda sedan in the opposite lane after trying to pass another vehicle.

Officials believe the driver of the Toyota was trying to pass another vehicle when they crossed into the oncoming lane.

Officials used fire extinguishers to slow the fire coming from the Toyota and then took out three occupants.

One occupant, identified as Mary Catherine Blosse, 73, of Bel Air, was declared dead at the scene.

The two other occupants of the Toyota were flown to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Their condition is critical.

Both occupants of the Honda, Craig Charles Faunce, 34, and Allison Mae Faunce, 35, both of Joppa, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Maryland State Police is yet to determine what caused the crash.
